“Amanda, for fuck’s sake. I can’t control what other people post on social media.”
“How many other girls have you told they were beautiful while standing naked in the shower. Those moments between us are special. I never let anyone else as close to me as you. I thought it was the same for you, but it’s not.”
“It is. I told you it is. I have a past. Randi’s just an ex. Someone I liked hanging out with. I had fun with her. But I didn’t love her.” He threw his hands up in the air. “I don’t know what you want me to say.”
“I don’t know if there is anything you can say. It’s just– this is very hard for me. How do you not give in to all the attention from other women?”
“It doesn’t mean anything. Give me some credit. Most of them don’t even know me. They’ve made up who I am for their own entertainment. Don’t you know me at all? Have you not been paying attention? I brought you to meet my parents. The only other girl who has met my parents was Ashli, my college girlfriend. That’s it. You are the first woman.” He crossed his arms over his chest.
“I’m sorry.” I sank into the couch. “You’re right. I don’t know what’s wrong with me.”
He sat beside me, his thigh resting against mine. “Listen,” he said, “I’m scared, too.”
I leaned against him, and he put his arm around me. “I never thought I could feel like this.”
“Me, neither.” He kissed my lips, then we gazed at each other for a moment, like we were staring into each other’s souls. I saw that ache in his eyes, and for the first time, I thought that he knew pain, too. Maybe from what he carried from his family, his father’s unlived life that he felt responsible for. I didn’t want to be someone else who wanted him or needed him to be anyone other than who he was.
I pulled his shirt off. He removed my clothes, then the rest of his. He carried me into my bedroom. We made love, closing all of the gaps between us. And like always, while he was close, the world seemed safe for a little while.

Jacqueline Simon Gunn is a Manhattan-based clinical psychologist and writer. She has authored two non-fiction books, and co-authored two others. She has published many articles, both scholarly and mainstream, and currently works as a freelance writer. Gunn is now writing psychological fiction. Always in search of truth and fascinated by human behavior, her fiction writing, like psychology, is a way for her to explore human nature — motivation, emotions, relationships.

In addition to her clinical practice and writing, Gunn is an avid runner and reader. Gunn is currently working on multiple writing projects, including the third book in the Where You’ll Land series.
